summer 2011

Now that the semester is over and grades have been posted (yay for getting back on Dean’s List!) it is time for summer!

Unlike any summer before this one I intend to make some goals, or as my friend Marina and I are calling it a bucket list, of everything we want to do this summer.

My list started off with two things and has slowly grown. I don’t think for a moment that this bucket list of sorts is complete. I think bucket lists continue to change as we change. Some of the things are silly and others are important to my future. Some have to be completed before others and some even have to be completed before the end of June (or my departure for China),

- get an additional piercing (either nose or ear)
- organize and repaint bedroom!
organize books, donate any if possible
- finish going through belongings in storage, donate if possible
- show the space bags who is boss, they won't make me look like a fool again
- write a resume!
- figure out exactly what i want to do after graduation
- look into grad schools/AmeriCorps/Peace Corps
- get an adapter/converter and figure out how to use it
- finalize list of what i'm taking to China (harder than it sounds)

This list above is just a short sampling of the things that are on my bucket list. There are other more personal things on the list that I won’t be sharing. Also, it sounds more like a to do list but the one I messaged Marina doesn't, this is just the things I feel like sharing.

Something that won’t be going on my bucket list is getting a job. I have been trying since senior year of high school to get a job. I have applied to dozens of places, receiving interviews at few and just getting flat out rejections by others. My most embarrassing rejection, Walmart, horrifying I know.

I think before applying to anymore jobs I need to actually get a resume. I feel like the short applications we are made to fill out don't really show who we really are. All they see is my lack of work experience; they don’t see my dedication and worth ethic that I have demonstrated in other areas.

In a perfect world I would have a job waiting for my after my return from China. I know this isn’t likely to happen because of how many places have rejected me. That being said this time next summer I will have a job. There is no question to that. There cannot be another year without a steady supply of income. Graduation is fast approaching; when that happens I will not only have loans to pay back but also grad school to think of.

On a lighter note, my favorite part of summer is the added ability to read. Reading is something I absolutely love. Thanks to the closing of local a Borders I have a whole bunch of new books! I’m hoping to get through as many of these as possible. I also have a couple hundred on my kindle (yay for free books) to read before, during and after my trip to China.

Readers of my old blog might remember I used to review books and movies. I’m uncertain if I will do that this time around, possibly so that I utilize this blog more but we will have to wait and see how fast I’m reading and if I can think of anything interesting to write.
